With the seventh generation of the BMW M5 Sedan already undergoing intensive testing, BMW M has confirmed it’s developing a Touring variant of the high-performance model. A new hybrid powertrain is expected to underpin both vehicles.
While the prototypes are carefully disguised, they cannot conceal exactly what they’re covering up. Just like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the Touring variant will also feature a completely newly developed partially electrified drive system.
In their words, the perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance in 2024 as the car maker continues its journey to electrification.
For almost 40 years, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from racing and pioneering innovations have shaped this very car.
Engines with six, eight and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, the compound brake system with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones the M5 has set.

The seventh generation of the BMW M5 takes all this to the next level, with a precisely tuned chassis set to be paired with innovative systems that facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this vehicle class.
Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is set to commence in the next few days in urban traffic as well as on country roads and motorways around Munich and at the BMW M headquarters in Garching.
The integrated application of all drive and suspension systems will then also be carried out on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, among other places, with the aim of ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance and superior ride comfort for track and everyday driving.
It’s not yet known whether the new M5 Touring will be made available locally. We have reached out to BMW Australia to find out, and will provide further updates once we know more.
