This year is turning out to be a massive one for BMW Australia. It’s already celebrating 50 years of M with the release of the M3 Touring, M4 CSL and the iX M60, but now, news is out that one of the 8 X Jeff Koons special edition is headed here too.
If you’re a massive comic book fan and you have a deep pocket, then this has your name all over it. We’re talking about an exclusive BMW M850i xDrive Grand Coupe (of which there are just 99 examples) that have been reimagined by pop artist Jeff Koons himself.
This isn’t Jeff’s first rodeo with BMW either. Back in 2010 he designed the 17th BMW Art Car and was responsible for the artwork on the BMW M3 GT2 car that competed in the 2010 24hr of Le Mans.
Set to arrive on Australian shores in Q3 this year, just one example of the 8 X Jeff Koons is headed here, and we don’t even know the price yet. Expect it to be well above the original before on-road cost asking price of $282,900 though, given its sheer rarity.
To be offered in right-hand drive, the exterior design features elements of pop art that draws inspiration from the power and speed of the car, complete with “POP!” on each side, along with “vapour thrust imagery”. It all feels very much 1960s comic book.
Each vehicle has had 285 hours spent on applying 11 different paint colours, as well as a redesigned vibrant interior that has a striking finish thanks to the use of bright reds and blues. Under the bonnet is the original M850i powertrain.
That means 390kW of power and 750Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels via xDrive, through an 8-speed automatic transmission. In a cool touch, and as a reminder you’re driving a Jeff Koons exclusive vehicle, the artist’s signature is in the cupholder lid.
It’s here you’ll also find the vehicle edition number. Each vehicle also comes with a certificate signed by the artist himself, along with Oliver Zipse, the BMW AG chairman of the board of management.
