Peugeot launches new performance era with 508 Sport Engineered

PEUGEOT has launched its high-performance brand, to be known as Peugeot Sport Engineered, with a plan to establish a new type of performance vehicle range, focused on building machines with electric power.

Their range will kick off with high-performance versions of the Peugeot 508 sedan and sports wagon, under the guise of what will be known as responsible performance, or as the French car maker calls it, Neo-Performance.

The signature of this new line of vehicles will be three Kryptonite claws, visible in various locations on the vehicles, and mirrored in the light signatures of the production models. It draws its inspiration from the original 504 Coupé.

The power train in the new 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered models will be capable of generating 268kW of power and 520Nm of torque by astutely combining thermal and electrical energy.

This combination makes it possible to achieve almost instantaneous levels of responsiveness, including a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.2 seconds. A three mode shock absorption (Comfort/Hybrid/Sport) has also been added.

The seat plate has been lowered, tracks have been widened by 24mm at the front and 12mm at the rear, and 380mm diameter front brake discs and fixed four-piston calipers addded, alont with 20-inch diameter rims fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

The hybrid power plant combines the power of its combustion engine with two electric motors, front and rear. The 4-wheel drive transmission ensures optimum traction in all weather conditions. Fuel economy is an impressive 2.03-litres/100km.

Five driving modes are available directly via the mode selector on the centre console, including Electric (with a pure EV range of 42km), Comfort (hybrid mode with soft suspension), and Hybrid (which automatically chooses the best power options).

Sport provides maximum power, and also affects steering, shock absorption, accelerator pedal mapping and digital engine colouring. The combustion engine ensures that the battery is charged for maximum power at all times.

The final mode is 4WD, designed to deliver maximum traction for slippery grip situations. The hybrid platform has been developed with the same expertise utilised to launch the 3008 hybrid and standard 508 hybrid recently.

Recharging modes are flexible and adapted to each daily situation, including less than 7 hours on a standard domestic socket, fully charged in four hours on a 16-amp reinforced plug, and in less than two hours on a 32-amp Wall Box.

Thanks to a smart layout for the electric motors and battery, the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered edition has the same interior and boot volumes (above the floor) as the internal combustion versions.

The adjustments to its chassis have been fine-tuned by the team at Peugeot Sport, with precise cornering the result of an ultimate steering tune. In addition to its 4-wheel drive operation, it comes with a full range of safety technology and driving aids.

These include night vision, adaptive cruise control with stop/go, departure warning system, and automatic emergency braking. The PEUGEOT i-Cockpit compact steering wheel featuring three Kryptonite claws as well.

It’s a distinctive element of the Peugeot Sport Engineered brand. Other features include a digital head-up display, a digital instrument cluster, and 10-inch HD infotainment screen.

The upholstery of the ‘comfort-fit’ seats also has a distinctive look with a mix of leather, 3D mesh and Alcantara. The passenger compartment is decorated with double Tramontane grey and Kryptonite stitching.

The FOCAL Hi-Fi audio system is supplied as standard.

The aerodynamic design of the bodywork is emphasised by a host of distinctive features, including a sharp grille, front bumper, scoops and Kryptonite monogram at the front.

On the side of the vehicle, there are three foils with specific decorative elements, and the three claws again on the quarter wheel trim on the saloon and on the front wing on the sports wagon.

At the rear, electrolytically treated black exhaust outlets, a black gloss central diffuser and Peugeot Sport Kryptonite front brake calipers, feature.

The 2021 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered will be available in three colours, Selenium grey, Perla Nera black, Pearl white. All monograms are black to highlight the naturally sporty nature of Peugeot 508.

On a side note, the launch of the new brand coincides with confirmation Peugeot will return to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in the LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) category from 2022.

Local availability is yet to be confirmed.
