Mitsubishi has confirmed its first new electric vehicle since the i-MiEV, the ASX VR-e, will join its lineup in Q4 2026. Developed in partnership with Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, it’s a sophisticated, tech-driven EV.
The new model carries the ASX (Active Sports Crossover) name – one that has a long-established presence on Australian roads as a compact SUV. The ‘VR-e’ designation is a nod to the legendary Galant VR-4.
The latter is one of Mitsubishi Motors’ iconic high-performance sports sedans and this vehicle aims to capture the essence of its namesake through its sporty performance and responsive handling.
That comes thanks to extensive local testing and tuning by Mitsubishi Motors global and regional teams. Underpinned by a sleek, Pininfarina-designed vehicle platform, the ASX VR-e exhibits signature styling elements through the front and rear fascia, wheels and interior trim.
The ASX VR-e’s exterior incorporates several features to achieve optimal aerodynamic efficiency, including an S-Duct to channel airflow from the centre of the front bumper, over the bonnet. Active grille shutters reduce drag according to driving conditions.
“ASX VR-e marks a significant milestone in our refreshed Mitsubishi range as the first BEV since the i-MiEV – Australia’s first mass-produced electric vehicle,” Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO Shunichi Kihara said.
“The new Mitsubishi ASX VR-e continues this path of innovation with an immersive infotainment system, bold design and excellent electric driving performance,” he added.
“It joins an evolving multi-powertrain vehicle lineup designed and tuned with Australian lifestyles in mind as part of our Momentum 2030 plan – which will see the electrification of new models in the years to come.”
The 2027 ASX VR-e will debut in Australia with four model variants: LS, ASPIRE, EXCEED and GSR. Further information, including full specs and pricing, will be available closer to launch.
