MG3 revealed in Sydney at glitzy event

At a glitzy event delivered in partnership with Elle Australia in Sydney, and featuring celebrity actors and musicians, the covers came off the new MG3. Completely redesigned, it’s built on a new platform, and features a hybrid for the first time ever.

The well known trim levels remain, under the guise of the Excite and Essence, with the choice of two powertrains, a 1.5-litre petrol offering, or that same powertrain paired to a Hybrid+ electric motor.

The first conventional, non-plug-in hybrid system fitted to an MG model, it delivers 4.3-litres/100km in terms of fuel economy thanks to its 1.83kWh battery and 100kW electric motor, which is paired to a 75kW petrol powerplant.

Three driving modes feature, including Eco, Standard, and Sport, while specs across the range are impressive. The Excite grade includes halogen headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, and connectivity options such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Upgrading to the Essence adds a sunroof, LED headlights, 360-degree camera and ability to remotely turn on and off the air conditioner or heater via MG iSmart. The latter is a subscription service that is free for the first year of ownership.

Inside, occupants are treated to a spacious interior featuring a high-quality cockpit and a 10.25-inch infotainment display as standard. Safety has also been a focal point in this new model, with adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning on board.

These are joined by automatic emergency braking and blind-spot detection among a decent list that makes up the MG Pilot safety suite. Once Australia’s cheapest car, the MG3 gets a price hike to go along with its revised features and hybrid powertrain.

Opening the list is the MG3 Excite (petrol), at $23,990, with the Essence variant at $25,990. The Excite Hybrid+ is $27,990 while the Essence version of that platform is $29,990. All prices are plus on-roads.
