MG has launched Australia’s cheapest fully electric vehicle, with the announcement of pricing and specs for an expanded MG4 range. Set to enter the market at $38,990 plus on-roads, the Excite (51) variant offers plenty of kit and exceptional value.
Built on a scalable modular platform, the EV only model offering boasts 50/50 weight distribution and rear-wheel drive. Available in four trim levels, the entry level offering is powered by a 51kWh battery and is expected to have a 350km range.
The next step up is 64kWh version of the same model, adding 85km in potential travel distance and improved performance. The sporty sibling, which was originally set to be the only variant, is known as the Essence, and is loaded with the same 64kWh battery.
Thanks to additional technology it’s good for 450km. A long range version of this model sports a 77kWh battery and is capable of 530km in range. The latter two offerings grab MG’s Pilot safety technology suite and an app that remotely connects to your car.
MG is also thought to be considering a dual motor version, known as the X-Power, should the MG4 prove a success down under. All variants can charge to 80 per cent in as little as 25 minutes if you have access to a 150KW DC fast charger.
The 64kWh Excite is priced at $44,990, with the Essence at $47,990 and the Essence Long Range at $55,990 – all plus on-roads. Just to add to the competition, Chinese rival BYD will add its Dolphin EV this coming Thursday (22 June).

MG have also announced a sporty looking sedan in the form of the MG5. Carrying the brand’s 7-year warranty, it features fastback styling, and is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The MG5 range opens with the Vibe, while a feature packed Essence variant grabs a turbocharger and extra power and torque. The former comes with a CVT gearbox, while the latter scores a 7-speed DCT.
Key features include a choice of six colours, with the Essence also grabbing a sunroof, synthetic leather trim and 360-degree parking camera. Priced at $24,990 and $28,990 respectively, drive away, it’s set to be a super competitive offering.
