THE Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the best selling model series in the company’s history and perceived by many as the heart of the brand. Now the much loved range is dressed in a sharper suit and incorporates exciting new technologies.
Refined road presence has always been a hallmark of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and that impression is only strengthened by key external revisions that reinforce its status as a flagship of confident sportiness and exclusive elegance.
All models are fitted with the sports themed AMG Line exterior treatment featuring AMG inspired body styling, such as the 19-inch AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels on the E 200 and E 300 e models, while the E 300 model sports 20-inch AMG Multi-Spoke alloys.
Newly contoured headlights, plus a revised radiator grille and front bumper, announce a meaningful style update. For sedan models, sleek new generation taillights, a new rear bumper and new boot lid further enhance the already dynamic stance.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is now also equipped with the comprehensive and intuitive MBUX multimedia system, which can be actuated via spoken commands, and by using the centre 12.3-inch digital touchscreen in the widescreen cockpit array.
It can also be utilised via a swipe-and-tap controller embedded in the steering wheel, or using the touchpad between the front seats. Each model in the range is equipped with a new digital generation of steering wheel too.
This includes integrating an array of controllers, plus, for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz, hands-on detection is enabled via sensor mats integrated into the steering wheel rim. It really is the high-tech command centre of the E-Class.
It enables the driver to steer precisely and, at the same time, comfortably and safely operate numerous comfort and assistance systems via capacitive touch panels.
Another new feature is MBUX Interior Assistant, which is standard on the Mercedes-Benz E 63 S 4MATIC+ model and optionally available on other models (excluding Cabriolets) as part of the Innovation Package.
Interior Assist allows actuation of some cabin functions by intuitively detecting hand movements from either the driver or passenger using a camera in the overhead console.
For example, a hand gesture toward the centre touchscreen can change the media display or highlight individual elements. Or, a reading lamp can be switched on by extending a hand towards the interior mirror.
An augmented reality display is able to be specified for the first time when the optional Vision Package and Innovation Package are selected (standard on E 63 S 4MATIC+ models).
Augmented reality intuitively overlays navigational signals and key driving assistance information directly onto a forward camera view displayed on the central navigation screen.
One example would be to assist the driver to navigate a complex road junction by overlaying the camera view with easy-to-follow virtual signals. Every E-Class model also comes with the Driving Assistance Package Plus as standard.
This includes Active Distance Assist, which can maintain a steady distance behind the vehicle in front, and Active Stop-and-Go Assist, which at speeds of up to 60 km/h can maintain a pre-set distance even in traffic that is stationary for up to 60 seconds.
The comprehensive safety package also includes Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic detection, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Evasive Steering Assist and Route-Based Speed Adaptation.
The Mercedes-Benz E 200 is available in sedan and coupé variants and kicks off the range, each powered by a 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine sending 145kW and 320Nm to the rear wheels via a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission.
All E 200 variants are fitted with Active Parking Assist, a 360 degree camera, the Mercedes me Connect app that enables a suite of functions to be activated or checked from a linked smartphone, and smartphone integration.
Wireless phone charging for compatible devices, ambient interior lighting with 64 colours, and heated and electrically adjustable front seats with three memory settings in Artico or leather (E 200 Coupé) upholstery are also standard.
In addition to the comprehensive specification fitted to E 200 models, the Mercedes-Benz E 300 upgrades to leather upholstery across the range, and adds air suspension, multibeam LED headlights with 84 individually controlled LEDs, and metallic paintwork.
A 2.0-litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is paired with a 9G-TRONIC auto and generates 190kW and 370Nm. The E 300 specification is available in sedan, coupé and cabriolet models.
Available exclusively in the sedan variant, the Mercedes-Benz E 300 e provides a petrol-electric hybrid alternative to the well specified E 300. A 2.0-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (155kW/350Nm) is supplemented by a plug-in electric motor.
This generates 90kW/440 Nm via the same 9G-TRONIC auto. Total system output is 235kW/700Nm. With the onboard battery topped up using the standard Type 2 charging cable, a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 2.2-litres/100km is possible.
The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ has been keenly priced to create an even more accessible entry point to Mercedes-AMG performance for E-Class customers.
Packing a 3.0-litre, 6 cylinder turbo petrol engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, it pumps out 320kW and 520Nm, with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed auto and 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive. Up to 16kW and 250Nm of further electrical assistance is available.
Additional to the E 300 specification, the E 53 adds Nappa leather upholstery, front sports seats and a sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section, a heads-up display with virtual windscreen projection, and AMG sports pedals.
A 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system and a panoramic glass sunroof are also standard. A sports braking system adds larger brake discs with perforated front discs, while speed sensitive sports steering is also included.
A selectable AMG Performance exhaust system, a boot lid spoiler lip and 20-inch, 5 twin spoke black alloy wheels complete the package.
Available solely as a sports sedan, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ marks the pinnacle of the range, and turns up the wick on performance even further via the potent 4.0-litre bi-turbo petrol V8, pumping out 450kW and 850Nm.
Mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed auto and 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive, it comes with climatised (heated/cooled) front seats featuring Seat Heating Plus and the Active Multicontour Seat Package, with heated outer rear seats and a heated front armrest.
Ttri-zone climate control, ENERGIZING Comfort Control and AIR-BALANCE air filtering package are also included, as well as an AMG-specific steering wheel with selector buttons, and an AMG Track Pace data logger.
The MBUX Interior Assistant adds gesture control functionality, while the MBUX Augmented Reality system is provided for intuitive navigation, along with power-closing doors.
Performance enhancements include an AMG rear-axle limited-slip differential, an active dynamic engine mount and bi-colour AMG 20-inch 5 twin-spoke black alloy wheels.
Pricing starts at $96,900 (plus on-roads) for the E 200 sedan, with the range topping E 63 S 4MATIC+ coming in at $250,400 (plus on roads). For further information, please contact your local Mercedes-Benz dealer.
