Mercedes-AMG goes electric with EQS 53 4MATIC+

An exciting new era dawns for Mercedes-AMG as its first-ever series production model to be powered by a fully electric drivetrain goes on sale in Australia, with the landmark EQS 53 4MATIC+ available from today.

The luxurious yet sporty EQS 53 marks the introduction of high-voltage electrification to the local Mercedes-AMG range, and kick starts the arrival of other eco-friendly performance-focused models, which will score plug-in hybrid systems.

At the heart of the new EQS 53 4MATIC+ is a performance-oriented electric drivetrain with two motors; one each at the front and rear axles. Fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive optimally transmits power to the road in all driving conditions.

As standard, the EQS 53 achieves an impressive maximum total power output of 484kW and maximum torque of 950Nm. The optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package increases output to a maximum of 560kW and 1020Nm in RACE START mode with boost.

In this mode, acceleration from 0-100km/h is possible in as little as 3.4 seconds (3.8 seconds in standard specification). Top speed is limited to 250km/h with AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package fitted (220km/h as standard).

The EQS 53 is equipped with a powerful 400-volt battery utilising the latest in lithium-ion technology. The high-voltage battery has a usable energy content of 107.8kWh, and utilises AMG-specific wiring that is adapted for high levels of performance.

This advancement enables the EQS 53 to be charged at up to 200kW at quick charging stations with DC capability, as well as at home or at public charging stations with up to 11kW from AC sources, or up to 22kW AC via an optional AC charging system.

This high-capacity system endows the EQS 53 with a recommended driving range of 587km, assisted by the highly optimised aerodynamic shape that enables an impressively low drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.23.

Sound has always been an important part of the typical Mercedes-AMG driving experience, and the EQS 53 4MATIC+ brings a new, powerfully sonorous sound to electric driving.

Its sound system uses special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator to create a special sound experience in two versions: ‘Authentic’ or optional ‘Performance’.

This exclusive experience is generated inside and out with a tonality and intensity to match the driving status, selected driving mode or the driver’s wishes.

In addition to its breath-taking all-electric performance, the EQS 53 4MATIC+ brings further innovation to the Mercedes-AMG range as the first model equipped with the innovative MBUX Hyperscreen.

This large (1.41m) curved display unit extends the full width of the cabin, comprising three screens under a glass cover that appear to merge into one. The next-generation MBUX infotainment system adapts completely to its user and has a ‘zero layer’ design.

The latter ensures the most important applications are always displayed situationally and contextually in the field of vision. The Hyperscreen includes augmented reality navigation as standard, an OLED front passenger display, and a fingerprint scanner.

It also features rear axle steering for enhanced dynamic agility through corners, an AMG high-performance compound braking system, with six-piston brake callipers and discs at the front (415 x 33mm) and single-piston callipers and discs at the rear (378 x 22mm).

The EQS 53 is fitted as standard with AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive adjustable damping, featuring a four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear. Additionally, it adopts the DIGITAL LIGHT system debuted on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Inside, a suitably luxurious experience is assured by multi-contour, climatised (heated/cooled) and powered AMG sports seats with active cushion and hot stone massage functions, AMG nappa leather upholstery, and a head-up display.

THERMOTRONIC four-zone climate control and an AIR BALANCE Package, a Burmester 3D surround sound system with 15 speakers and 710-watt output, a digital TV tuner and DAB+ digital radio tuner, and active ambient lighting are also included.

Likewise, there’s a panoramic glass electric sliding sunroof, heat and noise insulated, infrared-reflecting laminated glass all round, and the Mercedes me Connect smartphone app with a range of remotely configurable functions.

An AMG Performance multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather includes steering wheel-mounted rotary controllers for on-the-fly control of AMG-specific driving modes. The Mercedes-Benz Driver Assistance Package Plus suite is also included.

The exterior, optimised for aerodynamic efficiency, is characterised by AMG-specific bodystyling including an AMG spoiler lip on the bootlid, plus LED rear lights in a 3D helix design with light band at the rear. Standard 21-inch AMG 5-cross-spoke light alloy wheels in tantalite grey can be substituted for an optional matt black finish, or for 22-inch multi-spoke light-alloy wheels in matt black.

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is now on sale and priced at $328,400 plus on-road costs. There’s a bunch of add on packages, including AMG Dynamic Plus Package, an Energizing Comfort Package, a Night Package, and individual optional extras.
