THERE’S a new luxury small SUV in town, and its design focus is urban crossover, which probably goes some way to explaining its name, the 2019 Lexus UX. It’s a name the Japanese car maker hopes will become a gateway vehicle to the brand.
According to Lexus, the UX delivers innovative luxury and safety in a package that combines bold new design elements and ultra-efficient new petrol and hybrid power trains. It is aimed at first time Lexus customers and first time luxury vehicle buyers.
Due in Australia late this year, the 2019 Lexus UX is engineered to deliver quick and engaging driving with a Lexus-smooth demeanour, making it a unique entry in the luxury compact crossover segment.
The 2019 Lexus UX is available as the front-wheel-drive UX 200, with a new high-efficiency 126kW 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine coupled with a new Direct Shift continuously variable transmission.
The UX 250h pairs an even higher-efficiency version of the 2.0 litre petrol engine with a new fourth-generation hybrid drive system, engineered specifically for this platform. It is available with either front-wheel drive or E Four electric all-wheel drive.
Combined output of 131kW makes the UX 250h the leader in performance and fuel efficiency for the range, while providing exhilarating driving, high-speed responsiveness and a feeling of smooth, natural acceleration.
The Lexus UX is the first vehicle built on the new Global Architecture – Compact (GA C) platform with its lightweight yet super-rigid structure, extremely low centre of gravity and refined suspension.
Pricing for the UX will start at a super aggressive $44,450 plus on-roads for the base model UX 200 in Luxury trim, ranging up to the UX 250h AWD in F Sport trim at $61,450 – again, plus on-roads.
