Lamborghini launches hybrid Urus SE on Cockatoo Island

Lamborghini has used Sydney’s Cockatoo Island to deliver the Oceania debut of the Urus SE, the car maker’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. The glamour launch was attended by more than 250 special guests, including Exhaust Notes Australia.

Dubbed the car with two hearts, thermal and electric, the Urus SE will feature 100 colour options for the exterior, including new shades Arancio Egon (orange) and Bianco Sapphirus (white). There are 47 interior trim options, with four types of embroidery.

A total of 11 combinations of drive modes now feature, with the traditional Strada, Sport, and Corsa modes (for road and track use), and Neve, Sabbia, and Terra modes (for surfaces with a different grip than asphalt).

These are now joined by EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge options. The first of these new PHEV-focused modes allows for 60km of electric-only driving and a top speed of 130km/h. Design-wise, the Urus has had a facelift too, for a modern overall look.

Powering the new model is a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, paired to an electric powertrain that includes a permanent-magnet synchronous EV motor, built into the 8-speed automatic transmission. The combo is good for 588kW and 950Nm.

A new centrally-located longitudinal electric torque vectoring system with an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch makes its debut on this model. A 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery is situated below the load floor, but above the electronically-controlled rear differential.

Lamborghini claims fuel economy as low as 2.8-litres/100km (compared to 14.1-litres/100km in the Urus S) and a sprint to 100km/h time of just 3.4 seconds (with a top speed of 312km/h).

Asia-Pacific regional director for Lamborghini, Francesco Scardaoni told us the Italian car maker still planned to follow through with its shift to full EV (while rivals struggle to make it work), and that the process will take place over four phases.

Alongside the high performance hybrid Revuelto and Temerario, and the new PHEV Urus SE, a fourth model currently being prototyped. That offering, dubbed an Ultra-GT, appears to be a cross between a GT car and an SUV.

The new Urus SE PHEV grabs the latest HMI 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, debuted in the Revuelto, along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, with new telemetry setups just for this model.
