Hatto’s Shitbox Rally: motorcycle legend raises money for cancer

Cancer affects all of us in some way, directly or indirectly. Inspired by motorcycle family, the Galvin’s, whose daughter Lucy is battling Ewing sarcoma, Tony Hatton and his daughter Peta have entered the Shitbox Rally.

Tony, or Hatto as he’s best known, has a long list of motorcycle racing achievements, including three Australian 125 GP titles and two Australian 250GP titles, in a career that spanned three decades.

His interest in bikes came long before that though and at 12, he subscribed to Motorcycle News, and by 14 was riding his pushbike up to Terrey’s Green in Terrey Hills to watch motorcycle racing. The rest is history, as they say.

Hatto went on to have a huge career as a rider, tuner and mentor, winning all the big races that Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan and Kevin Magee would go on to win. Now enjoying retirement but still riding on the roads for fun, he has a new passion.

Teaming with daughter Peta, the pair will be taking part in the Shitbox Rally Winter 2024. The dynamic duo will be driving their 10-owner 260,000km young 2004 Honda Accord ‘Goldie Horn’ in the 4,500km trek from Bowral NSW, to Alice Springs, via Melbourne.

Peta’s mum, Tony’s wife Hayley Hatton, has been working flat out with the team raising money and awareness, selling loads of cool things, as well as amassing a raft of awesome prizes for a huge raffle.

A huge garage sale will be held on 23 and 24 March 2024 from 8am, at 2 Alcorn Street in Bowral. Donations can be made on the team’s Shitbox Rally page. All donors will go into the raffle draw (tickets can also be purchased at this two-day event).
