GWM unveils refreshed Cannon ute range

GWM has taken the covers off an updated Cannon ute range, with the new model set to arrive in February. The latest iteration will introduce a suite of updates and enhancements, along with a larger, more powerful engine.

That turbo diesel powerplant is lifted from the Cannon Alpha Ute (a pickup we rated 8.9/10 for its off road prowess and comfortable on-road presence), and delivers 135kW and 480Nm.

It’s paired with a 9-speed transmission and forms part of a package that increases towing capacity to 3,500kg (braked). Exterior updates include a refreshed front and rear design, and large embossed GWM braning on the tailgate.

Inside, the cabin has been upgraded with premium materials, advanced technology and enhanced comfort features.

“We’re excited to bring the new GWM Cannon to Australian customers in February,” head of marketing and communications Steve Maciver said.

“With almost one in five vehicles sold in 2024 being a ute, it’s vital for GWM to stay ahead in innovation and technology while meeting the evolving needs of our customers.”

The full model line-up and pricing details will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s February launch. You can register your interest to find out more on the GWM Australia website.

  1. Hey no matter how good I might be you don’t need to buy a Chinese CCP Communist party Ute. Do you ??? Buy a Toyota or a Korean built Ssangyong – a better Ute for the same price. Somethings are only made in China but cars and Ute are not. Support the free world – shame on you for even considering a Chinese vehicle.

    • Toyota has been manufacturing parts in China since before WWII and whole vehicles since the early 2000s, including the Camry and Prius. They have partnerships with two Chinese car brands, FAW and GAC, who make Toyotas for the Chinese market. Maserati builds in China, so too Volkswagen and Chevrolet, even electric Jesus builds our Teslas there.

    • Australia and China have been trading partners for decades—bet you don’t mind when China buys our iron ore. I’ve owned plenty of Toyotas and love them, but price-wise, they don’t compare. Grow up—everything’s global now, and picking a ute isn’t a political statement.

    • Not sure about your stereotyping Chinese made products. I have had a GWM ute for two years and it’s by far these best I have owned. After owning Tritons, Rodeos, Patrols and land Rovers this bit of kit out does them all . Also note, there has never been a recall on them unlike the car of the year Ford Ranger and the Hilux which have had several in the last couple of years

  2. I am on my 3rd gwm vehicle. X240, X200 lemon n now a cannon base model ute. Unfortunately my 2nd vehicle was a lemon.. but no problems with the 1st one nor this one… so far. Haven’t been off road with the cannon but the others proved themselves many times :^)
