General Tire Grabber AT3 (product review)

Twelve months, one Jeep Wrangler, and more mud, gravel and coastal rain than any tyre deserves. That’s been the life of the General Tire Grabber AT3’s we bolted onto our 2012 JK. After a year of living with them, the verdict is surprisingly straightforward.

They’re still a bloody good all‑terrain tyre, with a couple of caveats. The biggest surprise hasn’t been off‑road at all though, it’s how civilised the AT3 is on bitumen. Road noise, usually the tax you pay for chunky tread blocks, is impressively low for an A/T.

They’re genuinely quiet, and offer stability in the wet. Handling is predictable, steering feel is decent for an A/T, and the hybrid tread design keeps the Jeep from feeling like it’s rolling around on Lego blocks.

For a tyre built to chew through dirt, it behaves remarkably well on the school run. Where it matters, on mud, gravel, ruts and washed‑out fire trails, the Grabber AT3 continues to deliver. Traction has been consistently strong, especially on loose surfaces.

The open‑shoulder tread and self‑cleaning design help it shed mud quickly, something we’ve seen firsthand. General Tire’s DuraGen construction, stone bumpers and reinforced tread blocks are all designed to resist cuts, chips and deformation too.

After a year of mixed use, our set is wearing evenly with no structural concerns. The only cosmetic quirk is a faint white film on the sidewall. Harmless, but worth noting. Tread life is generally solid though lifespan may be shorter than you think if you do a lot of driving.

We haven’t done an endless amount of on-road tarmac chasing, so ours still look healthy after 12 months of mixed terrain. They may not last for 70,000km but they’re a real contender for a proper off road solution.

Available in 16 to 20-inch sizes (some stockists have 15 and 22-inch as well), the General Tire Grabber AT3 features large sidewall lugs for protection against rocks and stacked deflection ribs to push away debris, alongside the aforementioned highlights.

After a year of real‑world punishment, the General Grabber AT3 has proven itself as a genuinely versatile all‑terrain tyre. It’s quiet, confident and comfortable on the road, yet tough enough to handle the rough stuff without flinching.

Yes, tread life can vary, and it’s not the most efficient tyre on the market, but as an all‑rounder for Aussie conditions, it’s hard to argue with the value. If your 4×4 spends its life split between bitumen and bush tracks, the AT3 remains one of the smarter choices.

Pros – surprisingly low road noise for an A/T; strong wet weather performance; durable construction for rough terrain.

Cons – tread life can vary; average aquaplaning resistance; fuel efficiency trade-offs.
