Ford Transit City set to power up commercial solution

Ford Australia has announced the latest addition to its comprehensive lineup of work-focused vehicles, the all-electric Transit City. It will be offered in a single specification, priced at a neat $50,000 drive away.

Designed to compete head-on with new entrants to the market, the van sports 6.4 cubic metres of cargo volume, enough to accommodate three Euro pallets, and a payload of 1085kg.

It has been tailored specifically to suit urban fleet use such as last mile delivery. Notably, Ford has optimised it by utilising real-world telematics data of over 2,000 Transit Custom van users, which in no small part determined its final powertrain specifications.

A single 110kW electric motor drives momentum through the front wheels, thanks to a 56kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack. The LFP chemistry was selected for its superior thermal durability and long cycle life.

It’s also resistant to degradation under frequent DC charging – noting that with 87kW DC charging, it can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 33 minutes. In just 10 minutes, it can gain 68km of range.

While it only delivers 254km on the WLTP combined test cycle, its effective regenerative braking and optimised one-pedal driving system enables a claimed 380km of urban driving range.

Mind you, even the combined cycle number should be more than enough for most users, based on Ford’s data. The company’s findings revealed that typical urban daily trips average 76km, with 90 per cent of daily routes requiring 200km of range or less.

Ford also projects that scheduled maintenance costs should drop when compared to an equivalent diesel van. Part of this is its 12-month/30,000km service intervals. There’s also a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty when serviced with a Ford dealer.

The battery is covered by an eight-year or 160,000km warranty. “Transit City represents a new way of thinking about commercial vehicles for Australian and Kiwi businesses,” Ford Australia president and CEO Fadi Mawal said.

“We know urban operators need a van that’s affordable, capable, and ready to work from day one, and that’s exactly what Transit City delivers.” The Ford Transit City is set to go on sale from November 2026.
