Ferrari launches Speciale edition of its 296 GTB

Ferrari has unveiled the latest variant of its 296 GTB with the reveal of a Speciale edition that boosts combined output from its hybrid powertrain to a whopping 648kW. A dedicated suspension setup and extra boost enhance the driving experience.

The mid-engined plug-in hybrid berlinetta joins the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale and 488 Pista in a list of iconic limited run models. It sets a record for a rear-wheel drive production Ferrari in terms of output.

That comes thanks to tech borrowed from the 296 Challenge, including engine management maps and boost strategy, titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons and a lightened crankshaft.

All these elements, together with a knock control system derived from Formula 1, have raised the power output, and facilitated a new setup for its 8-speed DCT transmission, which makes use of additional torque during gear changes to shorten shift times.

The 296 Speciale generates 435kg of downforce at 250km/h – 20 per cent more than the GTB on which it’s based, thanks to an aero damper integrated into the front bonnet and vertical fins on the rear bumper.

The spoiler is now managed by a new actuator control setup that not only shortens the transition time between low drag and high downforce, but also introduces a new medium downforce configuration.

To accentuate the dynamic capabilities of the 296 Speciale and ensure that the car behaves predictably when driven at the limit, Ferrari’s engineers also worked on fine-tuning the electronic control systems, suspension set-up and tyres.

The 296 Speciale is equipped with the latest generation of the ABS Evo dynamic control system, which improves braking precision and repeatability in all surface and grip conditions. The spring and damper settings have been revised too.
