Chevrolet Racing stuns at Bathurst with launch of drag car

Chevrolet Racing has used the backdrop of Bathurst to reveal the next phase in the multi-pronged development of its new dedicated motorsport brand, launching a 3,500hp (that’s 2,574kW) supercharged V8 Pro Slammer drag car.

Complementing the new Gen3 Camaro Supercar, the GM designed ‘Slammer’ drag car is also Camaro-based and will propel itself down the quarter mile in under 5.7 seconds, at speeds over 410 km/h.

“This is the next exciting addition to the Chevrolet Racing programme. This isn’t a concept or a digital rendering, it’s a real fire breathing Camaro that will debut in professional drag racing competition at the highest level later this year,” Chevrolet Racing general manager Chris Payne said.

“Chevrolet Racing is the new heart for the fans who have followed Holden in Australasian motorsport for more than 50 years. As the big brother to the Gen3 Supercar, this race car demonstrates the ongoing commitment of GM ANZ to motorsports at the highest levels.”

GM has been part of the Australian drag racing scene with the Fabietti ACDelco race team, who will campaign the new car, for more than 15 years. The team ran a Monaro-bodied Pro Slammer to win the Championship in 2017.

They followed that up with second place from 2019-21 and, most recently, were runner-up at the 2021 WinterNationals. Maurice Fabietti, owner and team principal, has high hopes for the new Camaro.

“We anticipate the lightweight carbon fibre body will allow us to develop some significant aero advantages and are confident we’ll see some sub-5.7 second quarter mile times,” he said.

“After 12 months in build, it goes without saying that we’re more than excited with the new car and can’t wait to set it loose with driver Sam Fenech against the competition later this year.”

Debuting in the same stealthy black and gold livery as the Gen3 Supercar, the new Chevrolet Racing drag car will compete in 2023 wearing its traditional all-makes ACDelco red, white and blue colour scheme.
