Berik Mugello one-piece leather suit (product review)

Berik have returned to Australia with a revised range of biking apparel, covering leather track suits, bike jackets and pants, and an array of gloves and boots. It’s the former, the Mugello one-piece, that we’ve put to the test over the last few months.

Utilised across both track and road, the Berik Mugello one-piece leather suit offers quality at an affordable price point. With longevity (we’re hoping to keep them active for several years) the key, the $1199.95 sticker price isn’t too bad.

Available in three colours, Black/White, Hi Vis/Black/Red and Red/Black (as tested), these were the first set of full leathers we’ve ever worn that weren’t custom made. To be honest, that gave us a little trepidation about the sizing.

That was particularly so because yours truly has not a lot of meat on his legs, a little pudding around the middle and broad shoulders. “what could possibly go wrong?” was pretty much our first thought.

After referring to the online sizing guide and having the cheese and kisses help out with measurement duties, we went with a size 58. When the suit arrived, it fit well, with all those initial nerves fading away.

The Berik Mugello suit is constructed from 1.2-1.3 premium Italian cow leather, with Tense-Tex stretch material strategically placed on the arms and back of the knees, to provide flexibility and freedom of movement.

Polychloroprene material on the wrist and neck assist in enhancing overall comfort. The suit also offers plenty of protection, with reinforced leather on the shoulders, elbows and bum, adding an extra layer of coverage where you need it most.

There is additional external protection on the shoulders and knees and an aerodynamic hump for when you need to be streamlined at the track. CE removable armour in the elbows and shoulders is included.

An optional chest protector (sold separately) can be worn inside the suit. Perforated leather inserts provide superior ventilation and allow excellent airflow, which was evident as we headed to Sydney Motorsport Park for a couple of track days in the first weeks of Spring.

On the bike, the Mugello suit is comfortable and allows plenty of movement. Key areas such as the wrists, ankles and neck offer good flexibility. It’s an impressive bit of kit that’s not only nice to wear and protective, but looks the part as well.

Pros – comfortable and protective; solid value for money proposition; good looking kit.
