When you think of reliability, durability, and rock‑solid resale value, one badge inevitably rises to the top, Toyota. The latest HiLux Workmate continues that legacy with the kind of quiet confidence only decades of proven performance can earn.
In a segment where utes are increasingly dressed up with luxury items this variant feels almost refreshing. It isn’t trying to be a lifestyle accessory. Refreshed for 2026, it’s built to work and it does that well. The cabin is simple, functional, and free from gimmicks.
Everything you touch feels solid, and everything you need is exactly where you expect it to be. No fluff, no distractions, just a straightforward tool designed to handle long days, rough roads, and real‑world punishment.
From first glance you can see the HiLux heritage. The front treatment has been updated, and the colour-coded honeycomb grille is bold. It’s framed by a full width black insert that links the LED headlights. Daytime running lights are standard.
The black steel wheels suit the look of a tough ute and the tyres are very good in the wet (something we tested firsthand). The integrated side step in the rear black bumper blends well into the design. A solid and dampened tailgate includes a debossed Toyota name.
Available in tradie white (not it’s real name – that’s Glacier White), you can also opt for Stunning Silver, Ash Slate or Eclipse Black. The rocker, door and deck have anti-chip paint and the deck side has anti-chip tape, both designed to save the bodywork on gravel roads.
Inside, the Workmate means business, but is comfortable office. It is basic, with a real ignition key, an open glove box and four convenient cup holders. The almost bare cabin feels deliberately engineered, with major controls oversized, purposeful, and satisfying to use.
Each switch engages with a confident, mechanical click that reinforces the impression of thoughtful design and solid build quality. The Workmate is satisfyingly simple. If you need to change the temperature, turn the rotary dial.
The automatic gear selector is easy to use, while the manually adjustable front seats are supportive and comfortable. The same can’t be said for the rear bench, which starts to be a bit of a punish beyond short trips, or if it’s home to small humans.
On the plus side, the rear seat can be lifted to allow extra storage. Heavy duty rubber sculpted floor mats are standard, as is a 7.0-inch multi-information screen in the centre of the instrument cluster. It’s visible through the tilt-adjustable urethane steering wheel.
The 12.3-inch multimedia screen is intuitive, providing wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, embedded voice commands, and DAB+ digital radio. Sound is fed to four speakers. On the road, the 2.8-litre turbo diesel connects to a 6-speed auto that’s well balanced.
Delivering 150kW and 420Nm, there’s plenty of pulling power and responsiveness when you put your foot down. It sounds beefy too. The independent front suspension absorbs undulations well and feels strong.
The addition of the electric power steering takes some load off the engine and the 4-pot front calipers feel capable when you hit the brakes. Underneath, the HiLux has a fuel tank protector and front tow hooks.
The rear has a solid differential with leaf springs and supports a 3,500kg braked towing capacity (with a GVM of 3,065kg). Toyota claims a combined fuel consumption of 7.4-litres/100km, and we achieved 8.1-litres in real world testing from the 80-litre tank.
The vehicle’s safety systems are generally well sorted and not overzealous, which is a nice change. Lane change assist is smooth and predictable, while radar cruise control works like it should, with no jerks or enthusiastic braking.
The 2026 Toyota HiLux Workmate 4×4 is backed by a 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty and complimentary Toyota Multimedia Connect for one year. It has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and is priced at $59,060 drive away (in double cab pickup trim).
