2026 Toyota GR Supra Track Edition (car review)

As the sun sets on the MK5 (A90) GR Supra following confirmation by Toyota that it has ended production, the Japanese car maker has offered up one last gift – a Track Edition with sharpened suspension, improved braking, and exclusive visual upgrades.

Growing up in the 1990s and 2000s, playing car games like Gran Turismo and Need for Speed, watching movies like The Fast And The Furious, there were a few all-time favorite cars. One of those was the MK4 Toyota Supra.

The MK4 supra wasn’t just a legend on screen, it was a legend in All Japan GT racing too. Most car enthusiasts would have fond memories of a Castrol Supra race car, or an orange street racer. Unfortunately that legendary nameplate was retired in 2002.

Fast forward to 2019, and to the glee of many, Toyota brought it back. While this reborn generation of the Supra has a heavy helping of BMW DNA, it still looks like an evolution of that famous MK4. The long bonnet, the big hips, its all there. A modern classic.

While there is a Toyota logo on the nose, it is undeniably Bavarian. It has a BMW 3.0-litre twin scroll turbocharged in-line six under the bonnet. It delivers 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque, which is no different to other variants in the Supra range.

The ZF 8-speed automatic transmission is BMW sourced, but the 6-speed manual is a BMW unit modified by Toyota. The chassis is BMW’s cluster architecture, as seen on the Z4 and 3 Series. It is even manufactured alongside the Z4 in Graz, Austria.

The Supra leverages world class engineering to fill a gap Toyota hadn’t touched in two decades. It gave Toyota a way to re-enter a class it hadn’t touched in more than 15 years, and allowed it to focus on visual design, suspension tuning and reliability.

Looks-wise, the GR Supra has a unique shark nose front end that is low, wide and aggressive. The headlights call back to the previous model, but are tidied up and refined with six-lens LEDs and integrated daytime running headlights and turn signals.

The sculpted bonnet leads into the double bubble roof which is a nod to the late 60’s Toyota 2000GT. It has a fastback style sloping rear window, which turns into an integrated ducktail lip. Over and above the slick looking GT and GTS trims, the Track Edition gets extras.

The list includes front underlip tyre spats and wheel arch aero flaps. The rear gets a more aggressive carbon fibre ducktail spoiler. The 19-inch alloy wheels are exclusively finished in matte black, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber.

The body is also available in an exclusive Matte Black, along with the standard colours. Once in the cabin, you’ll notice a few things. The seating position is low, like “on the floor” low. The roof is “watch your head” kind of low too. Past that, the look is very much BMW.

The dash cluster, steering wheel buttons, even the fonts and chimes, are straight from the German car maker. The iDrive infotainment system too, but it sits on an 8.8-inch screen in the Supra. This is no slander, more a reference to the premium tech that has been inherited.

The Supra also has a 12-speaker JBL sound system, colour head-up display and wireless phone charging. The presence of physical buttons to manage climate control and audio just makes sense for a performance car.

There are no back seats, or too many bells and whistles to bang on about, just a simplistic layout with a mix of soft leather and gloss carbon fibre. There’s not loads of boot space either, with just 290-litres on offer.

Absolutely driver focused, there’s a good amount of flexibility in the seating and steering wheel positioning. The digital instrument cluster carries the essential information you need to maximise performance, and not much else. It’s a refreshing touch.

It’s not lacking, but rather feels purposeful, and race-inspired. The Track Edition gets black Alcantara upholstery with embroidered GR logos, striking red seatbelts, and a matching red ring around the gear stick.

While there’s no increase in power over its siblings, there are several improves, including an upgraded chassis with reinforced rear underfloor bracing and a stiffened rear suspension subframe. The combination makes the GR Supra Track Edition noticeably firmer.

The BMW suspension has been tuned with a larger front anti-roll bar and adaptive dampers to give more feedback, making the car more agile and responsive through corners. The stopping power has been increased with larger 374mm front brake discs.

Up from 348mm, the new units ensure you can go quick, and stop even quicker. The calipers receive red GR branding too. All of that translates to a driving experience that is an absolute delight. The Supra feels firm and grounded, the exhaust note sounds refined and ready.

The excitement builds, even in idle, and then you stand on the loud pedal. Its punchy, it puts you in your seat as quick as it throws a smile on your face. The next thing you must find is a road that matches the car.

Find some sweeping corners, find some hairpin turns, find some undulating roads, and put it in Sport Mode. We did just that, and the rewards came thick and fast. Into a corner the Supra is stable and precise, the adaptive suspension does its job exceptionally well.

Increased negative camber translates to no signs of push mid-corner, with the GR Supra feeling well balanced, with minimal body roll. Out of the corner, it’s ready to throw you into the scrub if you don’t respect its capability – but when you do, it drives like a dream.

Power gets transferred to the road and away you go. Working your way up and down the manual gearbox is genuinely satisfying, and will probably mean you go the long way home (or to work) every time you get behind the wheel – such is the satisfaction it provides.

It will do its best to keep you safe too, with autonomous emergency braking, cruise control, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert and a reversing camera. That last one is important, because there are definite sightline issues.

That sits with the body shape, and is an unavoidable consequence of it being a two-seat sports car. Etched deep into the hearts of enthusiasts, the 2026 Toyota GR Supra Track Edition is a fitting send off.

It will be remembered, not for being flashy or attention grabbing, but for being an example of how Toyota can take a shared platform and inject it with a distinct, soulful character. For those who still want to catch a glimpse of it, Toyota has found a way for the legacy to live on.

The GR Supra (or at least a homologated version of it) competes in the Australian Supercars Championship Series, with a V8 jammed under the hood. Sold out at the time of writing, details of the road going Track Edition can be found on the Toyota Australia website.
