Head on, the 2025 Isuzu MU-X X-Terrain has an intimidating profile. The first of its kind, everything from the shape of the headlights to the size of the grille and its bodylines make it stand out from the crowd.
In a range that kicks off with the 1.9-litre LS-M and spans its way up to this vehicle, it’s fair to say that the X-Terrain is the obvious range topper. Its trims come blacked out, in a well executed look that’s both sharp and modern.
High gloss black fog light covers sit atop a similarly trimmed lower diffuser, with subtle XT badging to tie into the rest of the theme. An all-LED lighting package adds vibrant illumination while driving in the dark.
Just like other Isuzu vehicles though, this beast isn’t just about the looks. The X-Terrain is built for off-roading and keeping the occupants comfortable while doing so. That starts inside, with seven soft, plush leather spots to place your derrière.

There’s plenty of red stitching, and a soft centre cubby lid to rest your arm on. Lining the roof are four air conditioning vents designed to improve airflow throughout the spacious interior. The second row will comfortably seat three adults.
You’ll also be able to squeeze in two average-sized teens in row three. Having the air above your head has some benefits, if you like a breeze on your face, but isn’t for everyone. A crisp 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system features.
It’s here you’ll find a 360-degree surround view monitor (only present on the X-Terrain), off road displays showing pitch, roll and steering angles, wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. The latter two outputs through an 8-speaker sound system.
There are two USB-C ports for those stuck using a cable. Cargo space throughout the cabin is generous to say the least, and with both the second and third row seats folded away you could comfortably fit a double mattress in the back for camping.

Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque. The combination ensures the MU-X X-Terrain can handle rough terrain with ease.
We tested it on a drive just north of Hill Top in the NSW Southern Highlands and it did not disappoint, taking a variety of surfaces and conditions in its stride. Independent front and multi-link rear suspension ensure the ride off road is nice and smooth.
Even on 20-inch alloys with highway terrain tyres, the XT (as it’s affectionately dubbed) feels like it’s “in the zone”, and watching it contort over rocks and mounds is truly an amazing sight.
2H, 4H and 4L and a locking diff combine to make traversing terrain a breeze too, with the former perfect for day-to-day commuting and regular driving needs. You can use the second of these at speeds up to 100km/h, but it’s really just for extra grip, if required.

4L provides more torque and loads of traction when taking on the rough stuff. On the tarmac, the X-Terrain is easy to drive, with minimal road noise and vibration fed back into the cabin. The steering is light and precise too.
Sitting slightly above 1.8m, the height did catch us out at times, giving us a “will it make it” moment or two as it’s quite near to that common 2m roof height in underground car parks. We need not have worried of course.
To fuel this bad boy, you’ll need 80-litres of diesel, but it does slurp it at a very reasonable 8.3-litres/100km. It’s fair to say the 2025 Isuzu MU-X X-Terrain ticks a lot of boxes, both in off road and family car space.
With smooth ride quality, an engine that is virtually indestructible, and 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, it’s a solid package. It’s backed by a 6-year or 150,000km warranty, and 7-years roadside assist when you service with an Isuzu dealership.

Now for the the price – and that’s probably the biggest shock, at $81,188 drive away. If you can get past that, it’s an excellent choice, even against rivals like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest, or the more affordable KGM Rexton and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
