As reported by Exhaust Notes Australia, Isuzu took the covers off its shiny new off-road focused D-MAX BLADE 4×4 Crew Cab Ute last week. We were there to not only watch that happen, but to take it for a spin across some challenging terrain in South Australia.
Developed in collaboration with Walkinshaw Automotive Group over the past three years, its name is inspired by the Katana, the sword of the Japanese samurai, which symbolises strength, honour, and discipline.
The BLADE’s aggressive and chiselled exterior design certainly reinforces this image, looking reminiscent of a tough, life-size Tonka truck. With a wider wheelbase, chunky Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT tyres and flared guards it has a meaner stance too.
But it’s when you step inside and hit the start button that the beefy D-MAX’s off-road pedigree becomes apparent, and not for its interior either, but rather what it’s actually like to drive.
Featuring Walkinshaw-tuned suspension, and with a $76,990 drive away price tag, the BLADE was developed to deliver both uncompromising off-road capability and everyday versatility. Our journey behind the wheel began at the Adelaide Hills 4WD park.

It’s here that the BLADE’s driving dynamics took centre stage. Navigating steep inclines and declines, tight corners, and rocky outcrops, the Isuzu’s enhanced stability was immediately impressive.
The larger wheel and tyre package not only boosts cornering capability but also improves overall handling on the park’s rugged, narrow and uneven tracks, large sharp boulders, deep ruts and water crossings.
The BLADE’s underbody protection was put to the test on rocky sections of the trail, with the 3.0mm thick Walkinshaw Automotive bash plate offering extra defence for the engine and other vital components.
The recovery points have been reinforced too, should you get into trouble, with an 8.0-tonne load rating. Cross-bracing improves chassis rigidity; critical for serious off-roaders who often find themselves in challenging situations.
Isuzu’s suite of intelligent driver assistance systems, including trailer sway control, blind spot monitoring, and rough terrain mode combined to make hill climbs easier to manage. The latter ensures maximum traction by distributing power evenly across all four wheels.

The off road driving component of the two-day launch event gave us the chance to engage the latter, as well as locking the centre diff, with opportunities to test both 4H and 4L modes across a range of conditions.
It’s fair to say the more than 100,000km of durability testing (which included the Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola), conducted in partnership with Walkinshaw Automotive on the Monroe 35mm MTV twin-tube dampers has paid dividends.
Even on corrugated tracks, the suspension performed beautifully, absorbing impacts and maintaining vehicle control without bottoming out. After leaving the park, we hit the scenic roads of Adelaide for some more testing.
Despite the BLADE’s rugged off road capability, the suspension felt smooth and comfortable in suburbia, delivering a ride more reminiscent of a well-tuned SUV than a brawny 4×4 ute. Our next destination was the powdery sands of South Australia’s coastline.
With the tyre pressures lowered to 21 PSI, we flicked the D-MAX into the correct drive mode and hit the soft sand for a 14km run along Goolwa Beach. Taking in a variety of surfaces, and some steep sand dunes, the BLADE handled everything we threw at it.

That included having to avoid the incoming ocean and take a run up a dune, in what was a thrilling experience for this writer. Beach driving is a favourite pastime for many, but it can also be tricky. The D-MAX however was more than up to the task.
With a 29mm lift and that suspension setup we mentioned providing additional clearance and control, it glided effortlessly over the shifting sand. Its 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, generating 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque, made light work of it all too.
Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and Isuzu’s 4×4 terrain command system, the BLADE allows drivers to easily switch between 2H, 4H and 4L, ensuring optimal performance in any conditions.
Its 800mm wading depth means shallow water crossings along the shoreline were handled without hesitation, further proving its off road versatility. The specially developed tyres, with deep tread blocks and shoulder lugs, provided exceptional grip on any surface.
Their wide 275 65 R17 profile distributed the vehicle’s weight effectively too, preventing the BLADE from sinking into the sand. Inside, the cabin is rugged yet refined, making it a great option for weekend adventurers and families.

Leather accented seats, and a leather steering wheel and gear selector add a touch of luxury to the practical and well organised cabin. Visibility is excellent, thanks to its elevated seating position, and the driver’s seat offers 8-way electric adjustment with lumbar.
Cupholders abound and there’s a unique cool box above the glovebox that fits a 2.0-litre milk container. You’ll also find heated front seats and side mirrors, and a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Exclusive BLADE touches, like embroidered headrests, scuff plates, and floor mats, as well as individually numbered plaques on the transmission selector and engine bay, give each example a personalised feel.
Safety tech includes AEB, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert. More than just a special edition, the 2025 Isuzu D-MAX BLADE is a formidable contender against similar beefed up rivals.
Available in Sunstone Orange Mica, Basalt Black Mica, Granite Grey Mica, and Moonstone White Pearl, the BLADE has a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity. In line with the rest of the D-MAX range, it’s backed by the Isuzu Service Plus customer care program.
This includes 5-years capped price servicing, a 6-year or 150,000km warranty, and up to 7-years roadside assistance (conditions apply). You can find out more on the Isuzu Ute Australia website, or by talking to your local dealership.
