2024 MG3 Essence (car review)

The 2024 MG3 Essence is a remarkable entry into the compact car segment, offering a blend of style, performance, and value that’s hard to beat. From the moment you set eyes on it, the sleek design and dynamic lines make a striking impression.

The front grille exudes confidence, while the LED daytime running lights add a touch of modernity and with a starting price of $29,685 drive away, it’s a decent entry level option. It’s just as nice inside too.

Here, the MG3 Essence continues to impress, with its spacious and well-appointed cabin. The seats are comfortable and supportive, making long drives bearable. The dashboard layout is intuitive, and it features a user-friendly infotainment system.

The touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but between all this usability and functionality, the overall design feels a little dated. The biggest of these is that smartphone connectivity is wired (Bluetooth is cord-free though).

Worth noting too that the radio stays on well after you have left and locked the car (a feature we were spooked by, as was the boss while testing the new MG HS). There’s 293-litres of boot space, with the option to fold the rear seats, should you need more room.

For those with small humans, there are two ISOFIX and three top-tether anchor points. Under the hood, the MG3 Essence is powered by a 1.5-litre engine, delivering 81kW and 142Nm.

That’s mated to a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, providing a balance of drive and efficiency. Whether you’re navigating city streets or cruising on the highway, the MG3 handles it all, with agility and confidence.

Its a powertrain that’s perfect to plod around town, but is a little gutless when pushed on the open road. When you put your foot down, very little happens, before the engine kicks in and you can get up to speed. MG claims 6.0-litres/100km in terms of fuel economy.

Safety is a top priority for MG too. Kitted with MG Pilot, there are ten active driver safety features, including intelligent speed limit assist, intelligent cruise assist, rear cross traffic alert, autonomous emergency breaking and adaptive cruise control.

You’ll also find forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane change assist and blind spot detection. Pilot also claims to be constantly sensing your surroundings and is on the lookout for unseen hazards, which we can confirm is the case.

That said, it can be a little jarring at times in terms of lane management. For the price, it’s a good little machine, with low running costs making it a great option for those looking for proper value for money.

The 2024 MG3 Essence is available in Pastel Yellow, Sloane Silver Metallic, Black Pearl Metallic, Dover white, Hampstead Grey Metallic and Diamond Red Metallic. It’s backed by an exceptional 10-year or 250,000km warranty.
