2024 Honda CR-V VTi LX AWD (car review)

Last year we tested Honda’s fantastic ZR-V, which sits between the smaller HR-V and larger CR-V. We were expecting big things from the latter, being tested here in its VTi LX AWD form.

Walking around the $57,000 drive away petrol SUV, the quality and fit and finish stand out. The Canyon River Blue paint is stunning, with blacked out highlights and 19-inch alloys. Honda do luxury well and this vehicle proves that.

With a spacious, comfortable, first class cabin, purposeful and commanding exterior styling and road presence, and a ride that’s up there with the best Euro SUVs, it’s a solid bit of kit. It’s not perfect though, but more on that later.

The VTi LX sits just below the absolute CR-V flagship model, the e:HEV RS, and comes with a whopping 8-year unlimited kilometre warranty, 8-years roadside assist, and 5-years capped price servicing. That too, is extremely impressive.

Extra fruit over the standard models include free paint options, a 10.2-inch infotainment screen, 12-speaker Bose sound, ambient lighting, a sunroof, those 19-inch alloys, exhaust tip, and sports bumpers at both ends. You also get auto-tilt mirrors for reversing.

Tinted windows, Honda Connect, heated front seats with two driver memory, a powered passenger seat, leather on the pues, steering wheel and shifter, dual-zone climate, and wireless Apple CarPlay (wired Android Auto) head a list of luxuries.

You’ll also find LED lighting, a power tailgate, sat-nav and keyless entry. Goodies aside, the CR-V offered loads of boot space, and in the back, heaps of leg room for everyone, two rear A/C vents and two rear USB outlets.

There are bottle holders in the doors, with rear cup holders in the centre armrest. If you often only have two rear passengers, they will be travelling in fine class indeed. It’s nice back there.

At 187cm tall, with my seat way back, there is still ample room for an adult in row two. A panoramic sunroof adds class, as do woodgrain door highlights. The rear doors open wide, which helps get the kids in and out, but careful they don’t nail the car in the next spot.

There are two rear ISOFIX points, two outer seat back tether points, and a roof mounted tether point. Only the front belts get pre-tensioning. Up front, life is equally luxurious, with plenty of key appointments and luxury in the Honda CR-V VTi LX.

The seats are well shaped, supportive and comfy, the steering wheel and controls fall to hand in a natural way, it’s quite intuitive. Pedal placement and the footwell is also comfortable, and we loved the tactile design of the central dashboard area.

It’s just about the perfect blend of hard buttons and touch controls. Easy to navigate and learn, clear, and it looks fantastic. The touchscreen has hard volume and home buttons, the air vents have large direction control levers and the climate is controlled with dials.

There are two USB ports, a 12v outlet and a wireless charging tray, plus two cup holders. Too easy. The gear selector is large and sensible in shift, plus there are shortcut buttons for economy mode, hill descent, brake hold and the park brake is electrically activated too.

It feels instantly familiar, as does the powertrain. This writer is eternally impressed with the refinement of the tried and tested Honda 1.5-litre VTEC turbo inline-four, producing 140kW and 240Nm, mated to a CVT.

It returns 7.9-litres/100km in real world testing, and with paddle shifters should you want to go manual, it does the job of getting you from A to B well. But while this engine feels zippy in the ZR-V, it more or less just gets the job done in the heavier AWD CR-V.

Out on the open road, on cruise, it copes well. Some off-road sections and in the hills, it works hard. While it gets off the lights quick enough, and will overtake on a motorway pretty easily, it could do with some more grunt.

The CR-V has a 1500kg (braked) towing capacity, but how that VTEC would cope with something pushing that envelope is questionable. It would be great with a smaller camper trailer behind it though, and is perfect for weekend getaways.

We made some great memories as a family with the CR-V VTi LX AWD, exploring some lovely old Aussie bush towns we could not have accessed in a front-wheel drive vehicle. We also took the kids dirt bike riding, where the Honda excelled.

There’s a few pain points though, and the price is one of them. In saying that, the quality and ride, comfort and refinement, combined with the versatility on and off road is undeniable. We reckon that makes up for the slightly higher cost.

There’s no ANCAP safety rating yet, or a 360-degree surround view monitor, and the reverse camera isn’t the best either, but it does score adaptive cruise, and a full sized spare, so that’s a plus.

It’s other downfall is the fact the AWDs are all five-seat, and to get a seven seat variant you have to go 2WD. As a large family of six, that defeats the purpose for us. But if you have a smaller family, want some of road ability and luxury, the Honda is hard to go past.

The details make this vehicle stand out. An above average sound system, intuitive and clearly well tested and developed controls for everything from the climate to the sunroof, and infotainment system, make for a great driving experience.

On the road, the handling is intuitive and confidence-inspiring, the steering is solid, braking is strong and effortless, cornering is stable and ride is firm yet still comfortable, even on corrugated roads.
