Having previously been offered as an entry level bike, the 2023 Yamaha Tracer 7 has been beefed up, with more features and an improved powertrain. Now a lightweight urban bike with long range capability, its aggressive ergonomics give off a strong adventure vibe.
Fitted with a windscreen and twin projector LED headlights, a similarly spec’d daytime running light, tail light and turn signals, the Tracer 7 has stand out looks. It’s powered by Yamaha’s high output CP2 cross-plane 689cc 2-cylinder liquid cooled DOHC engine.
Sporting a 270-degree crank, it produces 56kW of power and 68Nm of torque, with the latter delivered everywhere across the low and mid-range, as well as high up into the rev spectrum.
The fuel tank’s 17-litre capacity and efficient engine delivers 4.3-litres/100km in economy. That should translate to around 400km per run, if ridden sensibly. Suspension comes in the form of an adjustable 41mm cartridge fork with 130mm of travel up front.
The rear delivers 142mm of travel on the rear, and both feature preload and rebound damping, making it easy to set it up to suit your needs, and style of riding. ABS is standard front and rear, with twin 298mm discs and dual piston callipers on the front.
A single 245mm disc with Nissin single piston calliper can be found on the back. The brake performance is more than enough. Highly rated Michelin Road 6 GT tyres provide plenty of grip and confidence, even in wet conditions.
These are fitted to 17-inch 10-spoke cast alloy wheels; 120/70 front and 180/55 rear respectively. An upgraded 5.0-inch full colour TFT has two themes (Sport or Touring), which basically changes the layout.
You get a tacho and speedo, dual trip meters, an air temperature gauge, fuel consumption and fuel level. It’s all easy to read, but difficult to manage because the menu scroll button on the switch gear requires so much force to select options.
We found ourselves having to wait until we stopped to change settings. That aside, the handlebars are well positioned and we like the hand guards, with integrated turn signals. The other switch gear buttons are well positioned and user friendly.
The dual seat is well-shaped, supporting and comfortable on longer rides, and the pillion gets a decent portion of real estate. With a height of 835mm, shorter riders will also be able to touch the ground easily.
Twisty roads are a heap of fun, thanks to the Tracer 7’s great handling. While the engine might not have huge power, it has plenty of grunt, which allows you to use the bike’s engine braking capability to slow yourself down.
The gearing is good in all scenarios, and the clutch has a solid feel, although we would like to see a quick shifter and slipper clutch on offer. These additions would add to the price though, and one of the highlights of this bike is its value for money.
On the road, ride feels firmer and more sporty than a traditional touring bike, although you can fine tune that out a little. Tipping the scales at 197kg wet means it’s easy to manoeuvre at any speed. The upright riding position is comfortable.
The windscreen does a good job at delivering good protection, and can be adjusted on the move, if needed. It’s a genuinely versatile motorcycle that gives you the ability to comfortably cruise with your mates on long distance rides.
Throw in the fact you can also push hard on the twisty runs or zip through peak hour traffic on the daily work commute, and it’s hard to fault. If we had to though, the fact it misses out on cruise control and you can’t even opt for it, is disappointing.
