2023 BMW M 1000 R (bike review)

Surprises are always nice, and never has that been more true than with the 2023 BMW M 1000 R. From our first ride down a twisty hill, we knew this naked sports bike was going to be exciting.

If first thoughts count for anything, the full length version of OMFG certainly passed our lips in regard to how refined this bike is. It’s madness. Its 157kW of power is noticeable at 4,000rpm, and crazy from 6,000rpm to the 14,600rpm rev limiter.

When we say you’d better be holding on with everything you’ve got, we aren’t mucking around. BMW claims a 0-200km/h in 7.2 seconds, and we have no reason to doubt it, such is the power on tap. Importantly, it still has a real controlled feel to it.

Fear not if pure speed is not for you, as it’s still an easy and comfortable bike to ride at low speeds and less revs around town – even at 60km/h. Wheelie and traction control, and aero winglets ensure plenty of downforce too (an extra 11kg over the front wheel at 220km/h).

No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t wheelie this thing with any level of traction on. You can get the front wheel to lift a couple of inches from the ground though, even in third gear under power, or while exiting corners.

The up and down quick shifter is phenomenal, even at low speeds, and is up there with the best we’ve come across thus far. It’s fair to say the 2023 BMW M 1000 R has more tech and acronyms then you can poke a stick at as well.

From DDC (dynamic damping control) to DTC and DBC (dynamic traction and brake control respectively), along with two different ABS platforms, it’s all on board. You’ll also find an adaptive headlight, heated grips, cruise control, multiple riding modes and keyless riding.

There’s even hill hold assist. The combination of all these goodies make’s it easy to ride the M 1000 R, simple to flip-flop from side to side through the twisties, all while still feeling like you’re riding on rails.

That performance and capability is thanks to things like a 45mm upside-down telescopic fork with electronic self-adjusting dynamic damping control, spring preload, rebound and compression stages, with 120mm of travel.

This makes for a front-end that feels solid and confidence inspiring. The rear boasts an aluminium twin sided swingarm, DDC with a central shock, adjustable spring preload, rebound and compression stages, with 117mm of travel.

Mix the handling with the comfort and riding position of the M 1000 R, and it’s all but a complete package. The brakes are amazing. You get twin 320mm discs with 4-piston fixed callipers up front and a single 220mm disc with a single piston floating calliper on the rear.

This rider got to experience the power of ABS Pro while riding in traffic due to an “incident” that happened in front of him. Let’s just say the bike performed better than the rider who nearly pooped his pants.

We also love little details like how the stand is easy to find without looking down, and the M logo in the LED headlight. We found the bar-end mirrors offer good visibility, with little to no shake or vibration.

The 6.5-inch TFT comes with a start-up animation as well as a multitude of rider modes including Rain, Road, Dynamic, Race or Race Pro 1-3. There are also four screen options to choose from, with connectivity via the BMW Motorrad app.

We did find the shift light flashing on dash at 7,000rpm annoying, but you can alter it to 9,000rpm, ensuring it’s going to flash less. The menu system is intuitive and easy to use, with some cool lean angle technology.

We managed to get it to 49-degrees, not Marquez lean, but pretty good for a fat old guy. Should you wish, you can also grab, the M Competition package, which comes with extras on top of the standard M 1000 R.

These include an anodised aluminium swing arm and passenger package. An M GPS Laptrigger code is included (you still need to buy the hardware separately), as well as an M endurance chain, and billet package.

The latter adds an M brake and clutch lever, brake lever guard, and rider footrest. An M Carbon package adds a carbon fibre front and rear fender, aero wheel cover, air box cover, chain guard and sprocket cover, and wheels among other items.

The 2023 BMW M 1000 R comes in one colour for each trim option; Light White/M Motorsport on standard bike, and Blackstorm Metallic on Competition variant. Pricing is from $34,715 ride away and it comes backed by a 5-year warranty.
