2021 Super Soco CPx (bike review)

SUPER SOCO has expanded its range in Australia, launching a new flagship electric scooter, the CPx. The new model features the same technology found on their TC MAX urban commuter bike.

Consolidating electric commuting performance and technology, the CPx is a fun way to experience urban transport. The design, as you would expect, is modern with edgy and sporty styling.

The CPx feels well proportioned without being overly heavy or cumbersome. At 2m long, 1.15m high and 76cm wide, it’s well proportioned for a 180cm, 100kg chap like this author. It makes you feel at home on this urban scooter, without being cramped.

There is also adequate leg room to be able to sit comfortably, while not banging your knees as you ride around. A comfy but firm bench seat is provided for the rider, and it’s long enough to comfortably fit a passenger.

There is a little external storage compartment up front too, which fits a phone or wallet, but whatever you store in this space remains open to the elements. A simplistic LCD screen house all the rider info, such as modes, speed, a trip meter and range until empty.

The whole bike is super user friendly and the LCD displays all the limited but critical information at an easy glance. There are three ride modes that directly influence top speed and battery longevity as well.

Our CPx was provided as a single battery offering, but in all honesty, unless we were living in the inner city and travelling less than 25km a day, we would tick the box and get the two battery variant for further range and flexibility.

Super Soco claim a maximum top speed of 90km/h for their CPx and with a slight downhill and some tail wind, we managed to exceed this in testing, and get a little closer to triple figures. This is why we’d tick the two battery option; because this scooter is fun.

During our test period we ran the CPx on a standard urban track around the NSW Central Coast to get the full commuter scooter experience, as well as hitting some country roads, with steep hills, lots of corners and no traffic lights.

And for those wondering why we’d do the latter, well, because we could. You see, one of the standout features for us is how the Super Soco CPx handled. Add to that the fact we recently tested a traditional petrol scooter and we wanted to compare them a little.

Riding on a 16-inch front rim and 14-inch rear, both with puncture proof tubeless radial ply tyres, the CPx offers approximately 145mm of ground clearance. The combination gave this rider confidence to tip the electric scooter enthusiastically into some nice corners.

Alternatively, when navigating city traffic, the handling package aided manoeuvrability and added to the charm of riding the electric scooter. All the while you’re conscious that you are making that little foreign hippie girl Greta Thunberg proud.

Stopping power was a standout aboard the Super Soco CPx too, with a cleverly designed braking system that combined front and rear rear braking (linked) to help reduced braking distance and offered a feeling of smoothness even when applying the brakes more harshly.

The electric drivetrain is rated at 4,000-watts and has a claimed range of 70km for a single battery, and a 140km range for the dual battery variant. Remember though that weight, wind, speed and gradient will all affect battery life.

On the road, we expected a little more go from a standing start from the electric motor, however the mid range was excellent, with smooth, crisp acceleration. The CPx does start to struggle at the higher speeds though, especially on harsher gradient roads.

We spent most of our time in the higher top speed mode so our distance was a little less than claimed. That said, Super Soco bases its claimed range on a constant speed of 45km/h. A full battery charge takes around 3.5 hours.

We did all of our charging via the onboard charging pack and a household power point, and the system worked flawlessly. It’s even easy to park thanks to the fact the Super Soco CPx is offered with reverse gear; a really smart feature to have in the urban environment.

Available in three modern sporty colour schemes including Phantom Black, Sonic Silver and Titanium Grey, the 2021 Super Soco CPx is backed by a two-year 10,000km warranty and is priced at $7,690 ride away for the single battery variant (as tested).

The dual battery variant starts from $9,990 ride away. What Super Soco have been able to deliver with the CPx is quality commuter scooter with all the best bits of the TC MAX. We’d probably just add a top box setup for a little extra storage.
