IMPRESSIVE doesn’t even begin to describe the 2020 Volkswagen T-Roc 140TSI Sport. It’s what you’d get if a Tiguan and a Golf had a lovechild. A little bit of both worlds, with all of the practicality and splendour.

It’s the bigger of the two new crossovers being launched by Volkswagen too, with the other being the T-Cross. The T-Roc is an impressive package at more than a sensible price point. One trim level, with a price that starts at $40,490 plus on-roads.

There’s a few option packs you can add, that will throw the price towards the high $40K price range, and there’s an X Special Edition that adds such things as a digital dash, bigger wheels, and contrasting body and roof paint schemes.

Our test car was kitted out with both optional add-on packages, with the Luxury Pack adding a panoramic sunroof, Vienna leather seat upholstery and individually heated front seats. The Sound & Style Pack brings the 140TSI Sport in line with the X offering.

Well close enough to it anyway, by adding 19-inch wheels, adaptive chassis control (ACC), progressive steering and a beats 300W sound system. A premium paint colour can also be added.

And if that’s not impressive enough, you’ll get a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine, powered by a single turbocharger, producing 140kW and 320Nm of torque to all four wheels thanks to Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system, as well.

The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG (direct shift gearbox) transmission for super-responsive and quick gear changes. These power figures result in the T-Roc being a very nimble and quick crossover platform with a 0-100km/h in just over 7 seconds.

And it’s fantastic to drive. It’s smooth and comfortable around the suburbs, which is where our test car spent most of its time. It doesn’t punish the driver over potholes and bumps and didn’t make any alarming thuds and bangs.

Driving it spiritedly, there is a bit of body roll, which can be expected in a chassis of this type. But the T-Roc held the road quite well and even proved it could be taken off-road.

Outside, it doesn’t look too much different from a Tiguan or a Golf, daytime running lights surrounding some plastic trim masquerading as vents on the front bumpers. with LED headlights, and halogen fog lamps that activate when turning.

There’s LED tail lights with sequential indicators and red brake callipers for the sporty touch.

Inside, the cabin is spacious and isn’t your usual monotonous black and gray. You’ll find the seats have a touch of cream that Volkswagen are calling ‘ceramique’.

The completely digital instrument cluster offers plenty of customisation options, is brilliant, and is definitely one of the best standard features available in the T-Roc. There’s also an 8.0-inch infotainment unit which is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.

Legroom and headroom is plentiful for the front and rear seats. We were able to seat a party of four quite comfortably. However, we did notice the audio quality from the premium beats sound system degrades in the back end of the cabin.

It seems only the front half was fitted with the premium speakers. The automatic tailgate is an excellent feature too, as it grants access to the 392-litres of storage space in the wide boot.

This can be opened and closed via a button on the driver’s door or via the Volkswagen badge on the rear hatch. There is however, a parcel shelf that prevents the storage of taller goods, thankfully this can be removed, although it can be inconvenient.

The seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split arrangement for extra storage space. The T-Roc also employs an extensive list of safety features, which garners it an ANCAP safety rating of 5 stars.

This includes rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, automatic headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking.

We were definitely impressed, to say the least, with the Volkswagen T-Roc 140TSI Sport and what it could achieve with so little. The drive feel is outstanding, it’s quick, it handles well, and it can easily be used for commuting to and from the office every day.

It made the ability to drive so much easier. This might explain why we were only able to manage 9.7-litres/100km compared to Volkswagen’s claimed 7.2-litres/100km. It’s just way too much fun to drive and we can’t say that about many cars.

But what really won us over in the end was the amount of features the car came with, as well as its comprehensive list of safety tech.

Sure some of its competitors such as the Audi Q2 and the BMW X2 have a lot of its optional features as standard, but for the price point, the T-Roc is right where it should be.

Volkswagen offers a 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty, as well as a three or 5-year care plans and assured servicing pricing for anywhere between 12 to 60 months of ownership.

If you haven’t already got a wishlist for Christmas, the Volkswagen T-Roc 140TSI Sport should be right at the top.
